Dash of Salt - August 10, 2011 Edition

There are so many things to comment on and never enough time, so I am going to start doing a post here and there with random links/news stories that I find interesting, or in other words, provide a "Dash of Salt".
  • New phenomenon of college women seeking "sugar daddies" to pay for that mounting college debt. At what point does having self-respect outweigh the cost of college? Or is college just so important that women must do whatever it takes? The irony is that women used to marry for financial security, but that became seen as a form of slavery and a unhealthy dependence. They have now traded one form of 'slavery' for another. No matter how you slice it some women still need men for financial help; the difference is in how they go about getting it.

What's actually more common than the "sugar daddy" search is the temptation to respond to one of the ads offering hundreds of thousands of dollars for egg donation. Young women are solicited on college campuses to undergo a procedure that sometimes fails to produce enough eggs (so they don't get paid) and can leave them barren because the eggs, not their health, is the priority.

Aside: It's never a good idea to put off college. The decision to go or not go should be made when the person if young and can learn the easiest and before other commitments (like supporting a family) have to take precedence.

Re eggs--agreed there. That is indeed another scary trend.

College is all well and fine as long as you do not get bogged down with debt. Starting and supporting a family will be all that much harder if both or even one spouse has 20K plus in debt.
